BC Beer – Spinnakers Our Emily Summer Ale
I happened to be in the neighbourhood while Spinnakers was doing their little launch party thing for this beer. There is some statue that of Emily Carr that has been built, this is supposed to help raise some funds for it. I don’t really know, statues aren’t my thing. When I walked the stairs to the pub portion of Spinnakers I was immediately the youngest person in the room buy about forty years; so I snuck past the crowd and grabbed a quiet spot on the deck overlooking the inner harbour and Fisherman’s Wharf. A great place to be during lunch on beautiful sunny day.
Our Emily is a rather pale golden beer that, one could say, defines session beer. It is a beer with a purpose. Our Emily has a mild grain flavour with a touch of soft wheat that is followed by gentle floral hops on the end. I think Spinnakers’ Rob Monk has achieved what he was aiming for, and that is a light and refreshing have just enough alcohol the keep the conversation going late in to the night. That said, I’d prefer more of a hop presence throughout. Same hops, just more.
